This initial collection of resources was assembled by the college and university sectors in consultation with experts on teaching and learning. These resources will be revised and updated as part of a larger curation project funded by the Government of Ontario, during the 2015-16 academic year.
The Educational Technology Committee (ETC) is a subcommittee of the Coordinating Committee of Vice-Presidents, Academic (CCVPA), and represents the colleges’ practitioner knowledge base on the application of teaching and learning technologies.
HEQCO is an agency of the Government of Ontario that brings evidence-based research to the continued improvement of the postsecondary education system in Ontario. As part of its mandate, HEQCO evaluates the postsecondary sector and provides policy recommendations to the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development to enhance the access, quality and accountability of Ontario’s colleges and universities.
Increasingly students in Ontario (and beyond) are enrolling in online courses, but they often don’t have the necessary skills to be successful in this learning environment. How to Succeed in an Online Course consists of eight modules, with the goal of helping students to prepare to take an online course, improve their learning strategies in an online environment, and familiarize themselves with skills to succeed in learning online.
MERLOT is a free and open resource designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education. The MERLOT Journal of Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT) is a peer-reviewed, online publication addressing the scholarly use of multimedia resources in education. JOLT is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. The objectives of JOLT are to: Enable faculty to use technology effectively in teaching and learning by learning from a community of researchers and scholars; Enable academic programs to design and deploy academic technology to optimize teaching and learning; Build a community around the research and scholarly use of multimedia educational resources. JOLT welcomes papers on all aspects of the use of online multimedia educational resources for learning and teaching. Topics may include, but are not limited to: learning theory and the use of multimedia to improve student learning; instructional design theory and application; online learning and teaching initiatives; use of technology in online education; innovative online learning and teaching practices.
A policy framework, consisting of a number of documents, sets out the roles and responsibilities of colleges in more detail than in the Act and regulation. This binding policy directive applies to all colleges of applied arts and technology and defines expectations for all programs of instruction offered by colleges regardless of the funding source, except for ministry-funded apprenticeship training.
Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology throughout Ontario deliver a wide range of postsecondary programs designed to provide graduates with the entry-level skills they will need to become successfully employed in various vocational fields. Employers, industry and professional associations and program graduates currently working in the field are all involved in the development and review processes, as are representatives of the colleges themselves. The Learning Portal provides shared access to open resources from all Ontario Colleges. From this page, you can access your college library, shared library resources, learner support hubs, and virtual help. The main goal of the Learning Portal is to “provide equitable access to open learning resources and support to Ontario’s online college students”. The Learning Portal is currently being developed with new content added every week - with a completion target set for September 2017.
