The five Western Region Colleges (Fanshawe, Lambton, Mohawk, Niagara, and St. Clair) are pleased to share that the five Western Ontario College Educator Development Program Online Modules have been updated to version 1.2.  The updated modules contain a number of functional improvements.  Each module provides interactive e-learning objects, printable resources, and transcript that can be downloaded to comply with accessibility requirements.
 
The online modules are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike, and as such, these modules may be considered Open Educational Resources.

Module Descriptions

Active Learning and Lesson Planning

This module invites you to review strategies for planning lessons in intentional and structured ways that consider both the essential learning outcomes for your session and the diverse needs of your students. You will apply the BOPPPS lesson planning framework, a flexible system that can be adapted to any teaching context. BOPPPS will help you to incorporate important elements into your instruction, including opportunities to check and connect student’s prior knowledge, to engage them in active learning, to assess their understanding, and gather feedback on the effectiveness of your lesson.

Facilitating Student Learning through Engagement, Agency, and Metacognition 

This module invites you to consider opportunities for promoting student attention, curiosity, interest, and optimism through the activities and experiences that you embed within your courses. When students feel that they belong and when they are given the chance to learn from mistakes, they are more motivated to learn. This module will review important habits and strategies that promote learning. Throughout, you will be invited to reflect on the ways that you can design instruction to help learners build these habits.

Assessment Foundations

Assessment and the provision of feedback are at the heart of what we do as educator. During this module you will have an opportunity to explore a variety of effective assessment practices and associated research. By engaging with the module content and activities, you will be better equipped to design assessments that help you and your students accurately gauge their progress towards the achievement of learning outcomes.

Professional Practice for Educators

This module invites you to reflect on your teaching identity. Being an effective and authentic educator is more than being a content expert. Being an effective educator requires that you reflect on the experiences and beliefs that influence your instructional choices. It also requires that you seek out information and opportunities to improve your practice and better support student learning. Through this module, you will have an opportunity to consider how personal reflection, contemporary research, professional development, and open educational resources can support your growth and continuous improvement as a college educator
